How long had it been since they’d seen life outside of their own. In a sense, the life that he and Veita were leading were the one thing they’d both yearned for back when they’d first met as lone wolves; a life of belonging with another where nothing mattered but their continued survival and their unity as mates; back then however Cayden hadn’t yet truly come to know his family and since then, the echoes of the Oxen Corporation and it’s descent upon the mainland in such ruthless regard hadn’t escaped their notice even as far as they were out upon the Isles of Shadow fang, the forgotten plains of the former ShadowFang Pack where his former friend and part-time mentor Sato Nurasami had been birthed and then exiled from after a failed Coup de ’at.

For so long, the two north western islands had been theirs and theirs alone, Sato himself haven stepped away following their last confrontation in order to submit his own will for the sake of Cayden’s thirst for vengeance and the redemption of his kind; the two had fought day in and day out away from Veita’s knowledge and though he had come and gone from her receiving wounds of all kinds and refusing to answer her questions as to how he was harming himself so, he had a personal grievance with Sato that ran far deeper than that of his kin, it was a blood bond birthed out of a manipulative hatred and had torn his family apart in Cayden’s eyes. They’d come to some mutual ground after months of pain and bloodshed yet neither one had conceded and it was only on the fact that their kind seemed to be a dying breed not only here but also suffering far and wide in the Kumari lands that Sato had been willing to let step down and allow Cayden, the younger wolf though not necessarily the weakest, to step up and try to determine the future for the Nekishu bloodline and their people.

Upon the rise of the new sun, Veita would find him standing on the shores of the southern shadowfang isle looking back across the ocean towards the mainland. His brows heavy and eyes burden from a nights loss of sleep, he’d been distanced the last twelve hours, his mind reflecting back upon the family he had left behind in the Kumari plains and failed to reestablish a connection to despite hearing that atleast one of his sisters had come to Arcane, the capital of the country of Otara Imortus.

Their time alone in Shadow Fang had been a double edged sword for Veita. She had at first relished in having him alone to herself, the couple deeply in love and more consumed with each other then anything else. Yet times changed. She had been so used to living in an urban environment surrounded by life that it had taken her some time to become used to their absolute solitude on the isle. She had often felt very alone despite Cayden's company. He had changed before her eyes and an anger had come from within him she had not seen before, he had often gone away leaving her alone without explanation or warning only to return sporting various different wounds. His ignorance towards her was deeply painful, each time her mate dismissing her concerns or refusing her requests for answers until she started to question her trust in him.
Secrets were the thing that had begun to drive them apart. She had never held anything back from him yet he had gone out of his way to conceal truths from her, she felt it diminishing her worth in the relationship in a growing way until one day he stopped leaving, his injuries ceasing, the old Cayden that she loved more then life itself returning slowly to her.

Things had settled then and she had once again opened herself up to her mate, the sting of his betrayal lingering yet her love had never once faded. It only became fiercer the longer they were together. She would have followed him to the ends of the earth and never regretted a day of it.

Stirring within their den heavy eyes lifted, her body suddenly lifting to stand with a start as realised that again Cayden was gone. “Cayden?” rushing outside she looked around for him, her heart pounding. She could not cope with it again, the secrets, the anger...
“Cayden?” with no answer she moved away from their home until she managed to find his scent a wave of relief flooding over her as she discovered he had not gone far from her.

Following the scent she found him looking out over the breaking waves the sun rising over the horizon casting light brightly upon his heavily thoughtful expression.
Moving in beside him her side brushed his as she sat down to watch the sun rise her ears flat to her head with concern that once again her Cayden could be starting to slip away from her again.
“Cayden.. what is it?”

Wolven ears pricked back, his thoughts being interrupted by the sound of her padding hastily against the earth before the salty wind leapt up about them and emphasized her scent far too strongly to doubt that she had found him. Cayden hadn’t been trying to hide nor had he sought to startle her though Veita had grown noticeably nervous over the weeks. She’d not taken lightly to his need to approach the matter with Sato personally and privately; she knew little about the older wolf nor his past history with Cayden despite his relationship with Veita having now been long lasting in their years together. There were still some things that Cayden felt he had to do for himself however, both as the son of a former Alpha who’s pride and honor condoned the need to handle his business personally; as well as the vengeful hate he had held onto for so long for WolfMortum.

I am fine” He spoke up above the sound of the wind bringing the waves to lap up against the shoreline, He would have claimed that nothing was wrong in the moment but that was simply a lie. They had survived and yet what part of themselves had they left behind and locked away all for the sake of their own security. With the rising anger towards WolfMortum, the days had carried the burden of knowing and even seeing himself become more and more lost as Sato had become following his apparent exile from these lands, where as Cayden used to live alongside and rely on the pack beside him; at least he had been comfortable that way. To say they he felt as though he belonged would have been a farce, the only one who really made him feel like he belonged was Veita yet still, Pack life was essential for the love of family and the strength in numbers; above all else his integrity as a male wolf and the blood of a Nekishu.

I’ve been thinking…” He elaborated somewhat hesitantly, his thoughts contradicting what his heart was trying to tell him, “We made a mistake leaving the others behind. I thought that they would find their way but we’ve heard of no one…-I’m not sure I can live any longer without knowing what’s become of my pack-mates. My Sisters…” He turned to tilt his head looking back at her, a rough whine escaping his maw and before long, shifting to approach her and send his head sideways against hers in gentle affection, looking for reassurance and her approval. To enter back into the mainland and to challenge the humans, to risk being captured, enslaved or worse; it would be a fight and a long and bloody one if his family were still within the companies grasp. They had found sanctuary but they had failed to lead anyone else too it. Here there was game, a source of fresh water deeper within the islands, streams that carried it plenty down from the mountains and more than enough shelter for a pack to flourish. “I want to bring them here…-Whatever it takes…”.

The words 'I'm fine' were words Veita has heard a lot from Cayden in the months that has gone by during their time at ShadowFang, she knew better then to believe them and found herself simply nodding in response to them worrying that again they were about to face the same thing that had nearly broken them before.
She considered getting up and leaving her there upon the shore line to go back to the den and leave him to his own secrets and miseries. He had not been sharing his worries with her and she had long ago discovered that asking him anything about them only wasted both their time and energy.
Closing her eyes she sighed only to be proven wrong when Cayden actually did start to talk about his worries, including her in them for the first time she could remember.

Opening her eyes she turned her maw towards him taking in his expressions as he spoke his body moving against hers with a conflicted whine.
He had wanted to come here, to flea the threat upon the main land so they could ge back to nature. Veita had always thrived in town but had followed him without question and now he had changed his mind.
His reasons were sound and she understood well enough why he wanted to return yet she had never really wanted to leave in the first place.

Before she would have instantly jumped at the chance to please him by saying yes and doing exactly what he had wanted yet now she had so many questions he had always refused to answer she was unsure if what he said was really the reason for him wanting to return or whether he had an agenda that she had not been made aware of.

She would not deny him it though, she knew that. She would follow him to the end if only he allowed her to.
Leaning back into him the two sat there watching the waves, her eyes not having met his for more then a brief moment as she made him wait for a reply eventually answering him.
“When do we leave?”

The tension between them was unmistakable and part of him felt like Veita was trying to goad him into acknowledging it and yet over the weeks, the more he had fought for their survival and to claim the islands around them, to drive Sato away and to ensure that their security remained; the more he found himself growing harder, emotionally stronger and proud in himself. It wasn’t a personal pride in his mind but a males pride, an Alpha’s pride perhaps in what he once had seen in his father, Benjamin. Though they were not amongst a pack as his father often was, Cayden’s eyes were focused upon the far off main-land and for the time being he wanted only to move ahead with it. Veita was seemingly in agreement though not exactly over the moon about it, Cayden suspected that she had mourned for the human lifestyle, the cities and streets, the people…-Much of the things that he himself hated and feared as a threat against their kind and in all honesty, most things natural born that weren’t of their own kind. “We’ll get back the same way we found this place. The tide will be heading out in an hour or so, the islands will be walkable; we won’t need to take a lot with us if anything at all and if all goes to plan we can return as soon as we have the others…”.

There’s something that I must do before we leave…” He turned to glance to veita a moment, gauging her features in search of argument though he doubted that she would put up much of a fight, she had stopped arguing with him about his disappearances some few weeks back and Cayden wasn’t sure which was more worrying, copping her anger or receiving her silence; “Gather whatever you need and I’ll return shortly..” He concluded before moving to softly pad away from the beach heading further in-land to the island itself. Though Veita didn’t know it, they weren’t the only two living there. Or at least if she had smelled the others scent on him, she hadn’t asked him about it at all. Now however she would have the opportunity to track him if she so desired it and rather than venture out to visit Sato Nurasami without a word, this time it felt necessary to tell her, more so to ensure that she didn’t assume he would leave without her.

The fact was that Sato was a death bringer, a figurehead of lies and pain. That’s all that the old wolf had shown the world and all the world had apparently shown him; Sato was a weapon that Cayden needed to have in the back of his mind, an assurance should all things collapse around them.

Approaching the looming cave surrounded by vines and shrubbery draping down from the tree’s of dead wood; he slowed to a gradual stop just shy of the den and called out for Sato’s attention. “We need to talk...-I’m heading back in-land and I need your help…”.

The young wolf was well heard, the den was not deep though it was a well secluded area and one that Cayden so unfortunately knew how to reach fairly easily; they had fought and shed one another’s blood here often in the passing weeks. “Pray tell, just why exactly I should consider lending you my hand and not delivering you my blade in its stead…” Sato Nurasami replied aloud, remaining seated upon his knees, his Umanori Hakama covering his lower half while his upper body remained exposed, shirtless and showing the full wealth of bruises and scars both recent and otherwise while he himself proceeded to cleanse his sword, the Sakegari no Tachi or otherwise known as the blade of Totsuka; the natural and pure waters that ran through the cracks in the rock above offering a clean new shine to the steel, erasing near to all of the blood that might have dried upon her sharpened edge.

“Over the last two months alone you have challenged my steel on many occasions, you have sought to kill me and tried to rid me from the only land I’ve ever truly belonged to because yours was overrun but the humans…” Sato’s eyes lifted for a moment, taking in the wolven form of Cayden Nekishu while he himself remained in his mortal form, human in appearance though the eyes of a feral, one cold and not normally hesitant to spill the blood of any man, woman or child if only given the right justification for such a thing. “I left your world…” He added, in open honestly though also in mockery of the younger as he continued, “And now here you are in mine, trying to take it from me because there is so few other places left that haven’t been ravaged by the men and women of war. You could of course try your luck with the son of KnOT Death, though you would have better luck finding your way back home, trust me…”; those words of trust not escaping the younger. Cayden had been a ploy of Sato’s in the past, one that he had used to prolong his life through the black arts and manipulation of the source of life and natural energies of the world. He would undoubtedly never trust Sato again…-Though he had come regardless to ask for Sato’s help and that alone amused him. He would await Cayden’s reason; whatever it was that Cayden believed would keep the pair from entering into combat with one another once more for his treading into a territory that was not his own.

As he looked over the waves she did the same watching them breaking over the sands leading to their feet, at first she had found the breaking of the waves a comfort but in time it almost seemed to become a reminder of the loneliness she had felt trapped and in the dark with no knowledge of what her mate was doing or what he wanted. She had only wished to soothe him but she had not been enough, her failure to stand by his side a crushing one, not that she had been given much choice in the matter.

Cayden laid out his plan and she remained silent. He had obviously been thinking about it all for a long time and had planned it out. He wanted to return find a family she had never known and return to the same lands she felt imprisoned by in order to restore peace to his soul and make things right again.
He had never spoken of it before and she recoiled from the sting of once again not being included in his thoughts and his decisions. She found herself wondering whether he would go without her and leave if she were to say no.

With that he left her. If she had it in her to laugh she would have, his parting comment being to collect their things. They had nothing to take, having been in the form of wolves the entire time they had no clothing with them.
He moved away making no effort to hide his tracks from her and she followed. If he expected her to risk her life in order to track down his family he needed to let her know what the hell was going on.

Following in silence she also made no attempts to hide herself, not wanting to sneak up on him and put him on the defensive straight away. She hated the games of it all and wanted them over, wishing things were as transparent as they used to be in the beginning.

As a cave loomed ahead she slowed, Cayden not to far in the distance had come to a stop and called out to someone.
Tilting her head electric blue eyes narrowed as she took a moment to concentrate on the scent and work out just where she had known it from before. That is when she remembered.
Cayden unconscious at the feet of a large man, one that she did not much care for and before she had chance to move closer to Cayden he appeared.

Confusion danced across her face as she watched. Cayden had hated him, yet now he seemed to be talking to him and he knew where to find him, she began to connect the dots. He had been leaving her to see this monster. She just didn't know why all she knew was that Wolf had once more been hurting her mate.

As she listened she found herself angry, not just at wolf but at the two of them. Cayden had been keeping some pretty deep secrets from her.
Moving forward now and into view she did not speak. She had heard both of their words and from what had been spoken most of the blame for the injuries Cayden had suffered lied at his own feet. He had bought the fight to Wolf, Not the other way around.

Normally she would have gone to sit beside Cayden, to have both of them face Wolf together yet this time she sat slightly to the side of him, none of her body touching his. Purposeful and with a message as she waited to hear what else the pair had to say.

To get to know Cayden Nekishu was one thing, to love and adore him as a mate was something that he cherished but when it came to understanding what it was that made him the Wolf that he was, you had to dig deep into his past and his upbringing as a pup stolen from his Father’s lands by a Mother deceived by another.

You deceived everyone to get to where you are today, alive but alone and left with nothing…No friends, no Pack, no one to accept you for what you are or love you because of it”.

Sato Nurasami had bought the loyalty of Benjamin Nekishu and Eclipse Stellar during a time where Eclipse was feeling vulnerable and isolated; the wolf in turn found an opportunity and though Sato hadn’t set out to divide the pack initially, when things began to change in him, he seized the moment and made a decisive act, coercing Eclipse away from the others and leading them astray from the pack lands.
Cayden had been born along with his Sisters, Mikayla and Maylin; the latter of whom fell behind in the groups fleeing the Kumari Plains and was later discovered by their father, rescued and return to the rest of the Wolves of the Kumari.
Losing Maylin led to Eclipse’ decline, she suffered under the weight of her decisions blaming herself and not having the strength to turn that blame on Sato. Instead the complete opposite happened and she became reliant upon him, so too the pups though most prominently Cayden Nekishu who was the lone male and one that Sato saw the potential to be a fighter and a tool for his shaping. Sato trained Cayden, spent hours with the male and taught him most of what the dark wolf knew at the time; through their sharing of blood and bond, Cayden become enthralled and blind to the corruption that had seeped into his life. With every blow taken in training, his temper grew and his senses dulled, Sato’s influence becoming stronger…-Only to be saved by a tragedy of a different kind.
Humans halted Sato’s reach upon the would-be family yet also separated them and in their attempt to escape the hunting party that sought their pelts, Cayden lost the others and spent the next years wandering as a lone wolf. Through his isolation from the others he managed to free his mind from the overbearing memories and demands, the training and the corruption of the mind slowly quietening as Cayden become a Wolf of the world, beholden to no one but the hierarchy of the wilds, the chain of survival.

You deceived the Pack in more ways than my Father could have thought possible; you brokered your own revival through the upbringing and manipulation of an Alpha’s son; stealing them away and turning them on their own….”.

In the one peaceful year he had, he had found Veita and they two had fallen for one another, become mated and for the first time since he was a youth, he felt he belonged to something larger than himself. He had tried to fit in among the members of the Kosta’s pack that his father had once resided as Alpha but the others did not seem to wish to know of him, few spoke to him and those that did remained distanced for reasons not of his understanding. Perhaps they saw the darkness behind him, he did not know.

I don’t know myself because of you…-I don’t have a Pack and my own family I don’t know how to relate to; I am estranged from all of my own flesh and blood and it is because of you…”.

Sato’s return changed Cayden. Delivered before his father and his mate, unconscious and carried by the wolf himself; it was discovered that Sato had been killed once only to be brought back from the veil through the corruption of Cayden; a piece of himself somehow planted within the youth, presumably back when he was a pup somehow possessed by their time together, the revelation that Sato had planned for such a thing even that far back was fatal to his confidence and shook all that he knew. It was then not long before Oxen-Corp came to the Plains and forced the members of the Pack into disarray. Veita fleeing with Cayden to these foreign lands; lands that Cayden knew to be Sato’s home once before all of this.

You used me for your ploys, you got your revenge and it killed you but to come back, your vengeance wasn’t enough, you had to destroy my families lives, you have stolen so much from me….-You owe me this!!”.

True, all of it was true in a matter of speaking. Perspective was a funny thing, these atrocious acts of his that everyone else found so disgusting, horrible and downright evil; Sato had done in order to survive and outmaneuver his enemy. For as long as he could recall, he had rivaled KnOT Death. The Leader of the Death Covenant hailed as a legend among the Vampire Lineage, guilty for mass genocide of the Lycan and Were-kind; shapeshifters, half man, half beast; they all felt the sting of Marcus Cranes hatred, a merciless lust for bloodshed that had been birthed in the days centuries passed where the first true war between Vampire and Lycan erupted from the night and swallowed villages, cities, humans and all manner of creatures in its wake. The Rivalry was in their blood, it was bred and bolstered through the generations and Sato Nurasami, today known as WolfMortum was a product of the first age, the one true war of the times.

All these things that I have done, any other rogue would do to ensure his own survival. Pack life was something I allowed myself to become entangled by and perhaps for a time I forgot myself and felt a part of your fathers happy go-lucky little family but that is not the true nature of the world…-In the end, all that I did, I did to surpass those that opposed me. Have you not been doing exactly that these passed weeks while you and your mate have lived upon my lands…”.

His glare shifted beyond that of Cayden who clearly hadn’t yet noticed the arrival of his mate, the female familiar to Sato upon the day of his rebirth into this world. The irony of their position and their choice to leave their own lands hadn’t escaped him. They knew nothing about the world they’d entered crossing the border from their country into this one and now when they were stranded with so few friends left in life, after so many weeks of fighting with him in order for Cayden to regain some semblance of confidence and authority, as if to counter the failures of his past, the younger male now asked him for help.

The main-land will offer you no sanctuary, surely you realize this. These are not the same lands your father hails from, they are harsher and far more distrusting of your kind. The human corporation responsible for the hunting of immortals originated from Arcane, the capital here in Otara. The moment they spot either one of you and recognize that you’re anything but human, you will be cast out on your own and exterminated with full prejudice. You and your entire pack should have stayed put back in Kumari, the weak are rarely tolerated by life here in Otara, they die quickly and painfully…”.

Cayden had not noticed her arrival and went on as though she were not there, she listened in silence not wanting to interrupt him now he seemed to be on a role. Sadly it was the most emotion she had seen from him in some time and deep down she couldn't help but feel jealous that someone else could bring anything more then two words out of him even though those words seemed hate filled and full of a legacy of rage.

Shifting her gaze between the two she stared back at Wolf as he noticed her there. No love lost between the two, she had only met him once before and he had made a bad impression she doubted that anything said now would change that, Cayden obviously still hated him.

Cayden had never really spoken in detail about his past and she had never asked him to. Some things were better off forgotten. She had her own past she often chose to ignore and she had never felt the need to get Cayden to recount his.
But as she sat there she listened to him recount parts of his life. WolfMortum seeming to be a larger part in it then she her known.

She had always thought Blaze raised Cayden, she only knew they had become separated at some point the news that Wolf had some how been a father figure to him making his behaviours of late make much more sense. Their feud spanned her mate's life. Narrowing her eyes at the larger male she kept herself from saying anything knowing that she would only regret it if she spoke up. Never had she seen Cayden in such a state and she had this excuse of a man to thank for it.

Hearing how Cayden really felt flattened her ears down against her head, his feelings reflected some of her own. They were loners, unable to make any ground with others. She had her own reasons but she had always just thought it to be how Cayden had chosen to live. His father had been so welcoming to her but now she knew, he felt disconnected and very alone. It broke her heart to hear this especially as the words were not meant for her ears. If only he had told her she would have tried her best to alleviate the feelings. She had thought him alienating himself from her, pushing her away and she had not understood why. Now she did.

He blamed Wolf for all of it. He had been leaving her to face the male who had been such a demon of the past to him. The injuries made sense now and her ears lifted her teeth fighting to show themselves though a twitch of the maw, her sudden urge to rip Wolf's throat out for touching Cayden nearly overwhelming her. Yet for both their sakes she forced herself to remain for now unseen.

'You owe me' the words shocked her, her eyes finally moving from Wolf to look upon Cayden. He wanted something from him? What could be possibly want from such a monster... yet another secret he had been keeping from her.

It seemed that Wolf knew all about Cayden's desire to return. And there she had been thinking he had confided his thoughts with her as he had been making the decision. Turns out he had already made it. The realization that Wolf knew Cayden's current mind set far better then she did came as yet another blow to her, one which crushed her beyond the others.
He did not care for the words that Wolf spoke of the human threat, anything would be better then the last few months stuck on the island with a lover who included her in nothing.

Defeated and wounded by the brief insight into the two males she started to withdraw herself, having heard enough. If Cayden wanted to go home then so be it. She now felt she knew her place. The silent partner in the relationship not worthy of inclusion.

He had never meant to decieve Veita nor make her feel like an outcast from their relationship, atleast it had never been his intention. Should the moment come when they finally tackle the burden between them, he would find no means to avoid understanding and even blaming himself for the way she was feeling now and yet...-For all excuses were worth, his history with Sato was not something he'd ever wish to involve her in. Both because it pained him still and was far too close to home, but also because he didn't wish to run the risk of her being hurt in the process of it all. Incidentally, regardless of his avoidance of her inclusion in it all, he'd managed to hurt her regardless. Still, his eyes were on WolfMortum.

"How foolish of me to come here thinking you might actually be of some use to someone..." Cayden scowled dryly under his breath, seething for how low of a person Sato really was now that his true colors were showing in full; "You're going to find yourself dying alone, and on the day that you do actually require someone's help, I hope they spit in your face and your grave remains nameless. That's all your 'legacy' is anymore, a nameless shadow of what you could've been had you learned to dismiss that fucked up need of yours to be accepted as a true rival by the Vampires Leader...-Look how far it all got you".

With that, Cayden turned his back on him. It wasn't until that moment that he became aware of Veita's presence, not by sight but by scent and the prints left buried within the dirt. She had come and gone, how much had she heard, Cayden did not know but he didn't enjoy the thought of finding out. She had been so distant with him lately, he didn't understand why, the two barely understood anything when it came to the needs of others, both outcasts themselves who had found one another in their darkest of days, his ears flattened atop his hand as he began to make his way back towards their clearing.

The sting of it all nearly proved to much to bare as she walked away from her mate and headed back towards the den which they had both been trying and failing at calling home. Cayden obviously had not found what he wanted in their solitude and she had found it some what of a prison. Happy days seemed few ad far between and she had long ago given up trying to push herself to feel any joy from the small pleasures around them in the wilderness. She had endured it all for Cayden, she would have endured it for ever if it had made him happy yet even with that she felt that it had not been enough for him, she had not been enough. His past has obviously taken priority in their present and from his silence she gathered that she would not be deserved any part in it.

The barren den welcomed her as silently as always as she passed the threshold into it. Sighting she stretched out limb to limb before forcing herself into a transition, bones and muscles contorting in a painful away as she took the form of human.
Wincing she grabbed an old t-shirt from the floor and pulled it on. It had been months since her last transition and the inactivity had caused the process to be painful, she focused upon that pain as she sat silently hoping that it would distract her from the pain she felt as she had turned and walked away from Cayden.

Never before had she questioned how much she meant to him but as tears stung her eyes threatening to spill she found herself considering whether she had simply become some annoying tag along or burden to her mate, she could not fathom why he would have wanted to hide so much of who he was from her in such an active way.
Drawing her knees to her chest she sat down on one of the cold uncaring rocks, her eyes going to the entrance of the den her senses picking up on the approach of another, she would assume it to be Cayden yet she did not get up to investigate, for now choosing to wallow in her defeatist conclusions.

He stood in the entrance to their Den watching Veita silently as she lay there in her human form; as if her preference of lifestyles wasn’t hard enough to ignore, she unintentionally displayed the beauty of her other side not knowing that despite how ignorant she must have thought Cayden of it all, he felt guilt for pulling her away from a place she felt comfortable. She rarely ever felt comfortable anywhere else. He had hurt her, his unexplained truths revealed going a long way to wound her inside where he had not wanted for any such thing. It was unintentional though he supposed that was not an excuse worth mentioning; lowering himself to his hind quarters, he sat there upon the earthen floor, ears pricked slightly, and back not at all admiring the feeling around their current standing.

How was he to explain any of it, he was not a wolf of passionate words, never accustomed to speaking up on his own behalf, never raised that way and certainly not learned during his time as a lone vagabond, a wanderer of foreign wastelands; so how was he to find the words to describe to the only one he really loved and held close to his heart, how all of this had played out and been justified in his mind.

You always were fond of them…

He exclaimed softly as he moved to delve deeper into their den, his paws meeting the ground with a soft pat in each step while his head hung low and his eyes looking to her, yet avoiding eye contact for all that he had done.

I could never be…-I tried, really but…

There was little sense in explaining it yet it started the conversation and hopefully elaborated on his mind some; while there was obvious reluctance and odd pauses as if he had to truly consider his words, he continued…

I was born to a pack that lost me. Raised by a wolf that used me and returned to my homeland only to be ignored by all except for my true blood and even then, the distance was too far to mend…

Shifting somewhat, he turned his body to the right, his eyes turning back for the entrance of the Den, a huff leaving him in resignation of himself and the admittance within that he understood nothing in the way of the world; he felt truly lost though to admit it to Veita, brutes like he and his father weren’t to be so weak.

I wanted this for the both of us. Even thought the others might eventually join us on these isles, there’s plenty room to start a pack anew…Our own pack, I’d thought. I’d meant to tell you about Sato…-You know I do not speak of my past though. As I do not ask of yours…”.

Pale eyes moved to watch Cayden as he looked upon her with what looked like anxiety, never before had she risen such an emotional response from him and never had she wanted to. They were an island for each other and had only ever given each other comfort and belonging, she sighed closing her eyes for a moment trying to pinpoint the exact moment when she had realized it had all gone wrong. Maybe she had missed it all, maybe there was something she could have done, at least knowing that there was something she would have been able to look past the blame that she had rested upon Cayden's shoulders. She wanted to find some fault in herself that would have caused him to apparently ice her out in such a way but she couldn't find one, other then the fact that she was not good enough. She had thought herself a worthy mate for him but she now doubted the very meaning of her life. She had revolved around Cayden, nothing else had mattered and no one else. It had made the shift in their relationship all the more brutal for her.

She didn't speak when he decided to break the silence, she hoped that what he had to say would offer her some in sight or some comfort. She wanted his words to come out like a balm that would sooth away all of the pain she had been feeling in the weeks since they had been living in Shadowfang. Yet he commented on her affection for humans, her form prompting him.
She glanced down at herself. He had understood her, she had no fondness for human beings as creatures, she just knew how to live as one better, she knew the way life for them worked, the world was more open the more human you looked. She had thrived as a human where in youth she had only suffered as a wolf. Her human home, her human body had offered her the illusion of comfort, she had been more self assured upon two legs then she had upon four. But she had adapted and changed as that was what he had needed and she knew she needed him.

He recounted a small part of his life in a very brief away and that seemed to trouble him, he looked uncomfortable, especially as he mentioned the Wolf from before. She remembered him and she was far from fond of him.
“You meant to mention him to me?” her voice was quiet, her rage concealed though only just. Never before had she felt ire towards Cayden yet she felt the heat of it now. “How about the numerous times you came home bloody and bruised and I asked you what happened? How about the times I worried for your life when you left for hours, I had no idea what was happening and only had to pray you would return home to ignore my questions once more. Did you not think to mention that vile man then?”

Veita had never questioned a decision or suggestion that Cayden had ever done or offered up between the two of them until now; he knew her well enough to see that despite how she kept herself restrained, there was a fire of hurt inside and he had been the cause of it all. The problem was that this was his way, the way of a male wolf having meant to be raised by an alpha. That male dominance, the need to take everything into his own maw and fight the hard fight all without endangering those he loved, that was the pride and by result of his very miss and match upbringing, he had grown into. The problem was that he knew not how to explain this in words that might somehow make her understand; he had not come away from his younger days stronger for them but carried the past like a weight that thwart his confidence in more ways than he’d ever admit.

It is done…-We will stay here no longer”.

In a short time from now, would it matter so much to her, still he wondered. To be back in the human lands again, surrounded by their kind. Unlike Veita who regardless of how much she liked their kind or their lifestyle, Cayden loathed them all with a hate in his heart. It had been humans to separate him from his mother and sister, hunters in the night that even after Sato had abandoned them for Arcane and KnOT Death, the hunters had come in and tried to take their lives. Hell, the only thing he liked about them was their food that Veita had introduced him to. He trusted nothing else when they came to play on matters of survival and safety.

My past is my past; I’d thought it was necessary for our future and you do not know him like I do, I did not want you to become his victim too…”.

He cared for her, deeply. Cayden loved Veita and she had loved him, come this far out of her comfort zone for him. He looked to her and now saw that it was all too much. She needed to be back in her home, a place she felt comfortable and that was clearly not here with him anymore. A heated huff escaped his maw as he turned to retreat for the mouth of the den, casting his gaze back outside as he spoke words that would sting them both, regret and remorse heavy in his delivery.

If what I have done is unforgivable; we will see the mainland soon…You can tell me what you want, there”.

And there it was again he shut her out, she could almost see a door slamming between them as he refused to talk or fight it out with her. He dismissed any concerns or anger she had shown and in turn he unintentionally closed himself off yet again from her. It was one of the most horrible feeling she had been forced to embrace, one of hopelessness and loneliness. He seemed not to value her opinion in their relationship, he also seemed not to understand or care about her pain and anger she would not have minded had he tried to at least her her out, or explain himself any further yet he had no intention of doing either thing.

He had made the decisions for both of them, without including her. He claimed he had tried to protect her from this 'Sato' which did nothing to abate the rage she was starting to feel. She needed protecting from only one man on Shadow Fang and at the moment that was Cayden, he had wounded her more then any foe could have. She had thought herself an equal with her mate and he had only proven that she had been foolish, to blinded by the love she felt for him to really understand the dynamic of their relationship.

He wanted her to ask no questions and to follow him blindly. She was stuck for words his blatant disregard for her concerns shocking her but then he turned and started to move away in retreat from her and from the situation, she rose to her feet her cheeks flushing with the heat of her anger as he moved away. What did he expect she would just follow blind and silent like a love struck child?
She didn't know what to do nor what to say but as the anger started to bubble to the surface Cayden spoke again, his words throwing ice cold water on the heated fires of her wrath, she stopped her hands falling to her sides as she looked at him water filling her eyes instantaneously, she didn't bother trying to hold them back. Unlike Cayden, she had no problem with allowing him to see her emotions.

One argument had led to this, he could not just try to understand, he would have chosen to run from her or let her walk away rather then to include her in his life the way in which she expected to be included as the one he was supposed to love before all others.
Gradually one hand moved to her chest as she felt the pain there as though a knife had twisted through her soul. He would forsake their relationship so easily?

Turning from him she looked upon the cold and unkind stone of their den walls, it seemed to hold more warmth towards her in those moments of pain then he did.
“You would give up so easily?” her words came out on a quiet breath, he had knocked the air from her lungs. “I mean that little to you?”

His front paws shifted against the ground, his gaze dropping as he put his weight to one side and seemed to move out of the discomfort of the situation between them. Something of a quiet whine escaped him, ears flattening back atop his head in response to the heavy words she had asked of him. That she could question his love for her, it forced him to turn and look back, hazel hues gleaming through what little light their den held, she would see in that moment the emotion in him had she not been facing the wall, the confusion in himself and the difficulty he was having in trying to explain the whole ordeal to her, or at least his side of it all. She however had just given him the notion that he was encouraging her to leave, he wasn’t, he’d only asked her if she could forgive him and otherwise left the choice in her hands. The fact was that he would more than likely stomach a relationship between them full of arguing and resentment over a span of years before he’d choose to leave her. No, that wasn’t at all what he wanted.

There is no one else as important to me as you are…”.

His words came firm though not aggressive but rather a confident sort of assurance; he had been distanced from his siblings his entire life, his father and mother too and though he sought to get to know them better, the fact was the damage had been done and he’d struggled and failed ever since. Veita had met him in his early days new to the Kumari lands after years of his absence, she had stomached his hardships and been there for him as he had tried to be for her...-But this, the issue around WolfMortum (Sato Nurasami); that was something he had felt he had to handle alone.

This is not something I could give up, even if I wished for it. I love you and I always shall…”.

In the privacy of their own den there wasn’t a lot of need to feel reluctant in saying such things; hell, their first time together had been spent unknowingly in the rock lake just bordering one of his father’s favorite hot spots, the interruption had been anything but private…

That is why you would need to choose. I would shoulder your resentment for years to come…”.

Her words had forced him to stop and turn back towards her. She did not turn to look at him yet but she could feel his eyes upon her searching out a way to change what had been said yet she still reeled from the words he had spoken to her. He had shaken her more so then she wanted to admit to herself.
At least he had not continued to walk away from her, that would have sealed her fears and she was unsure she would have been able to forgive him had he left her there once again.

His words were brief and long overdue, she could hear the emotion behind them yet he had not made her feel like such. For some time now she had felt herself an after thought to his plans, an irritation he put up with while attending to matters much more important. If only he could have heard her then when she had all but screamed out to him then all of this would have been avoided. He claimed she was of the most importance to him yet he had been putting himself before her for week, leaving her alone and afraid in a world not her own. It had been misery and it was a misery he had unintentionally created for her, she had stood by him through all of it yet he had continually pushed her away.

As he spoke of resentment it was her turn to feel a creeping guilt that took root deep within her. He thought she resented him? She would never feel that about him, she resented how he had made her feel but not him. He meant more to her then anything else and always would. She would bend to his will every time should she have to but she would not pretend to be happy when she was far from it.

He had made it sound as though he had given up but his last words reflected a very different truth. He wanted to stand by her through it all even if she hated him, he was just to broken to show her how he felt and she was no better for not seeing that.
Turning back to him she swiped the tears from her face and looked at him. He looked miserable and beaten pretty much reflecting how she felt.
“I do not resent you Cayden... I resent that you can't talk to me” she sighed it was beyond frustrating and made her worry about their future if he could not talk to her about this and hide it from her what else would he conceal in the future.
“I choose you, I will always choose you Cayden. Don't insult me by thinking I wouldn't” she was quiet her anger gone just sadness in it's place.
“I would follow you anywhere Cayden”

She was still his and he, hers to call her own. These past weeks, perhaps even months had been hard on her and finally she had shown it, Cayden risking nearly losing Veita and by some feat, the two remaining clearly loyal to one another. Sato Nurasami was an apparition of his past, Veita Roma was Cayden’s only future as far as he saw things. His family was bound to him by blood and he to them though Veita was the only one to openly choose to stand with him where as his former pack had mostly just tolerated him in their spare time. Much of Kumari had been Cayden wandering the plains alone with no source of interaction before Veita had come along, the two had stood at odds in those moments and yet found life-long mates in one another. Had he lost her now, he would not have recovered well, to say the least.

I won’t keep things from you again, Veita”.

It was as simple as replies went and yet he spoke the words genuinely. To add an ‘I promise’ or ‘lesson learned’ would only be to sugarcoat the statement whereas between the two of them, she knew that what he said, he stood by. There were so few creatures out there in the world these days whose words held no bond. Raikou Diasu had taught him many things, one being that honor came in many forms and to stand by your word, to speak up on what you believe but also to fulfil the things you promise, that was an integral part of honor in one’s self and in those around you.

You and I will continue on. I still need to see to my sisters and whoever else might have ventured out this far…”.

Seated on his hind quarters, he looked at her, his ears somewhat flatter than usual and his gaze drifting somewhat lower, still he looked at her and thought on the things that awaited them. Returning to the mainland would mean many things, to see familiar faces whether or not they remained friendly to the pair but also to step back into the open ground of Ox-Corp where they hunted those alike themselves actively.

I don’t trust the humans, they will kill us given the chance but you know them better than I do. How their minds work...-Where they might keep other people like us. I don’t know how much of a risk it is going back there and honestly I’d rather you stay here where you’re safe but…-When have you ever looked away from one of my fights…

That was something he did still recognize and he hoped she heard him when he said it, there was not a chance that she’d be left alone here just for the sake of his needing not to worry about her. Especially when he himself was being pit against the world the moment they stood back into it, a world where she knew it better than he did. He loved her for her strength, it went without saying that her not coming with him was out of the question.

Especially now that her trust in him had been so shaken.

In a way of admitting his errors and soothing her he assured her that he would be open with her from now on. Chewing upon the bottom of her lip she nodded hoping that he was indeed telling the truth or whether he was just trying to ease the situation at hand. She expected him to be fully honest with her from then onwards, she would not be so understanding a second time around. She would be second guessing herself were he to hide information from her once more.

Watching him as he spoke of his sisters she could see how badly he wanted to find them and she knew that she would never be able to stop him from looking for them. In fact she encouraged it even though she worried what would happen to him if he came to discover that something terrible had happened to them.
From what she knew of home and the cities they were to visit the places were some what of a war zone and most that went there had come to less then happy ends.

Speaking of humans always conflicted her, she understood him and why he felt that way. She hated them as well. She hated what they had become and what they were doing to people like her yet she had the conflict of always having felt more like herself when in a human populated area. She knew though that she would never force Cayden to live amongst the human world again, so she therefore had to let the past go and come to terms with being a creature of the wilds. She had been trying and she had been failing but she mainly attributed that to being so lonely and upset since coming to Shadowfang. She had to convince herself that things would change once they got moving again, especially now that Cayden vowed to be more open with her.

She would not argue with him about staying she knew very well that he could and would not force her to do so, he now knew just how lonely she had been there. If he were to leave she would be going with him and there would be no arguments about that, she simply would not have it.
Now moving towards him she looked him over her eyes holding nothing of the anger they had contained only moments before.
“When would you like to leave?”

Tomorrow. My Sisters could be anywhere…-Hell they may not even need me but if they do…-The least I can do is be prepared and the last thing I should be doing is entering a fight straight after all of this…”.

Cayden looked back to her, he was of course talking about all the stress and conflict surrounding their make-shift little threesome, him, Sato and Veita. There’d been too much bad blood to go around for Cayden to feel comfortable jumping into another fight. Those are usually the types of mistakes that’d wind up getting you killed, anything but focus on the objective becomes a hindrance and a liability. There was of course also the added fact that should they leave in the morning, they could spend the night together. Veita needed that time together, Cayden could see she’d almost come undone and he’d been responsible for that, his love for her hadn’t faded or been hidden beneath all the rest of the shit going on in this foreign world, it’d simply fallen victim to his lesser priorities and for that he needed to make up for, to make amends between them.

Rushing off doesn’t seem like the smartest move and I’d rather spend some time with you before we go. I’m sorry for trying to rush you earlier…”.

Cayden didn’t plan on returning to the islands of Shadowfang empty handed; this being Sato’s home only made it that much harder to swallow besides the fact that everyone else that he had known were now somewhere else, whether he’d abandoned them or they’d abandoned him or it was just a mix of shit with all the humans trying to run them down, he hadn’t quite decided. There was a mixture of guilt, anger, resentments and just plain ‘fuck you world’ swirling throughout him but being with Veita most always drowned it all out in the heart breaking truth that he wasn’t alone to struggle it all nor was everything as hopeless and consistently arduous as he often felt.

As she were still in her human form, Cayden decided to make the shift. He didn’t feel as at home in this form yet over their time together she’d helped him grow more accustomed to it and the human life, it had it’s advantages he supposed though their instincts were dull and their senses more or less completely void. The food and the sex though, that was a whole other side of different that he couldn’t deny he enjoyed.

His red hair fell across his fringe, Cayden blowing it briefly to clear it out of his eyes. He looked pretty scruffy in this form given his love for all things rabid and wild. His body wasn’t frail however, toned as was the body of the wolf, agile and fit. He pushed his way over to sit beside her and pulling her close to him he planned to spend the night just as they were. In the end it didn’t matter where they were nor how, they were together, that was enough.

End Thread.
