Dealer

Post by Matthew M on Mon 03 Apr 2017, 12:31

Dressed to impress he walked through the Casino doors, a picture of normality in the world of high stakes gambling. Making his way down the walk ways he nodded to those who looked his way, itchy blue contact lenses concealing any tell tail signs of his true identity.

“Good evening, Monte”
A large goon of a man had joined him forcing Matthew into line so the two could walk shoulder to shoulder. Dwarfed by the man Matthew looked upwards towards him with a half forced smile allowing the bully to dictate the route of their walk. “Chatty as ever I see” he chuckled eyes going back to the casino as they fell back into silence. They had met a few times before, Matthew having been brokering a deal since he knew the coven would be moving to The Black Woods. Now those negotiations seemed to be paying off 'The Boss' finally agreeing to a meeting to talk terms and conditions.

The V.I.P area loomed before them to which they both passed through without so much as a glance from the security. To the right a door with a key pad lock buzzed, Monte nudging Matthew to it he pressed his palm against it, the door swinging open to allow entry.
What he saw was some what hysterical forcing him to clench his teeth and remain professional. A bald man sat behind a desk. His stature very thin and by the looks of it fairly short. He looked absolutely harmless, yet Matthew knew better. The man owned the black markets and he was not fool enough to assume 'The boss' did not have some clout behind him.

An hour later and the deal was set. Matthew and 'The boss' had come to an agreement. The boss and his men would supply the new coven with as much black market blood from 'clean' donors as they needed at a considerable price. But one Matthew was more then willing to pay to ensure his new extended family were fed and did not have to die on the streets trying to steal blood from soldiers.

“Well..” Matthew stood, waiting for the Boss to rise so from the desk. Holding his hand out he grasped him sealing the deal with a hand shake.

All the while Monte had been in the background, silent. A trusted pillar in the black market community. Or so they had all thought. In reality the man far from trusted. He worked for another boss, he had been under cover getting as much information as he needed before being instructed to kill 'The Boss'

“It has been a pleasure doing business with you..” about to arrange the first drop off his words fell away, a glint catching the corner of his eye as Monte pulled a gun, the sight aimed directly for 'The Boss' head.
“Shit..” throwing himself across the desk as towards the smaller man Matthew put himself in the path of the bullet, taking it in the upper back as he slammed himself against 'the boss' knocking him to the ground.
Pain instant and brutal as the silver UV round fragmented inside the wound. Gasping he grabbed the man shoving him underneath the desk as the hulking form Of Monte strode over, grabbing Matthew up by the throat, hands crushing at his windpipe as a savage headbutt suddenly blinded him.

Dropped to the floor with a thud he rolled onto his side, his vision swimming, blood streaming from his back... He could hear footsteps, the door pounding as people rushed to help their leader, but the seconds were passing and Monte was once again raising the gun, this time with a clear shot. “No!” he hadnt done all this work, come this far in the deal to have the 'Boss' killed.. leaving the coven in the same dangerous predicament as before.

Stretching out he grabbed Monte's foot, twisting it as hard as he could, bone snapping through the flesh screams filled the room. Soon followed by hails of gun shots, 'The Boss' men finally joining them to neutralise the threat.

On his feet again it was all a bit of a blur, shrugging off any offers of help he tried his best to simply leave the club, having a quick conversation once again with 'The boss' to arrange their next meeting he departed as soon as he could.

Taking the back exit he took slow steps not wanting to draw any more attention to himself then he already had done.
One of the men had given him a coat, to help hide the mess. He pulled it around himself carefully and went on his way, finding it more difficult as time went on, until finally he admitted defeat lowering himself to the ground down the side of a pub building.
Trembling hands searched out the phone from his pocket only to see the disappointing image of it being crushed. “Well shit..”

He stepped out of the Pub and into the merciless wind of Saints Cities best, the chill in the air the topic of conversation within, those of the humans who could feel it having little else of importance to complain about it seemed, though to Karne this was as any night would start in the days of late. Saints City was as much a home to him now as the Blackwood was, that wasn't to say that he liked it but more to the point, to emphasize how estranged he'd become from his own lands. This was a moraless city, one of which housed little integrity in its people, the populace well known for their disregard for human law and often rumored to house refugees of the Immortal kind, hoping to make a play on the selfishness of the humans, a cover for their own survival. Karne had managed to do exactly that, and by extension kept Cassandra safe and out of the Corporations reach. It had paid off for the most part, the very same apartment he had rented out back when he had first returned to the land and used to scout out his fathers whereabouts, turned into a long term home as soon as he'd murdered the landlord and the few relatives the old man had held dear to his heart. A worthy sacrifice in the end, Karne had decided. Perhaps that was why Saints City felt so comfortable, it lacked the same virtue that he himself seemed not to grasp.

Raising a cigarette to his cold pale lips, he flicked his fingers and struck the flint of his lighter, igniting the flame that would soon burn away at the packed tobacco, the stench of smoke filling his nostrils though not alone, his brows narrowed as his hands slowly fell to his sides and reaching to the back of his belt, he withdrew a long slender knife, roughly the size of a huntsmans blade, finding his way around the small deck at the front of the establishment and soon taking in the sight of a crumpled form slumped against the alleyway wall.

The scent was distinguishable from all else in the area, though it caught him off guard none the less. He was a Vampire of high birth, a face Karne had seen once before though not recognized the lineage until his blood had been spilled. It was dense in it's smell, the blood of the purebred, an Elder Vampire. They were as noticable to Karne as a Lycanthrope was to a typical house dog, he had studied his fathers writings on their kind, known their scent for the blood that KnOT had taken from their very covenant trying to masquerade himself as one of their kind.

He didn't speak to him, didn't bother to announce himself, instead he knelt down before the crumpled form and sought to establish a better sense of his injuries. Blood soaked the material that hadn't been seared away from the burning of his flesh, the shoulder caked it in all, a single bullet round had pierced him through the back though the extent of his injuries didn't stop there, his skin had grayed around the heart of the wound of which lit up like cinder, charged flesh and dried out fragments of blood and fabric dotted the the front of him, it was a wound that by all rights should have killed the Vampire.

"You are fucking lucky..."

Karne spoke the fact plainly for the other to hear him, the consciousness of this Vampire seemed to be questionable, his eyes seeming to glance in all the right directions though his pupils were glazed and Karne wondered if he was making sense of anything at all. That lack of awareness could be a danger to them both had he not be moved. First thing was first however...The blade cut into his wrist like a hot knife to butter, he seperated his flesh and let loose into his artery that he might reach across the back of the fallen to coat his wound in the blood of his own kind. The unharmed, unspoiled source of nourishment would kickstart the healing process of the Elder Vampire, though too unintentionally feed the male the memories of Karne's past, Sporadic as they might be, Karne himself didn't contain the ability to manage his recollections as all Elders did, his memories shared would come and go, in no particular order.

"Time to get you off the street"

He announced, pulling Matthew up by the arm, wrapping it around himself and moving away from the pubs side of the street, instead moving back down the alley so that they might find themselves on the other side of the block and heading for the apartment of which Cassandra would hopefully be outcold in the bedroom. It was a risk bringing this one to that place, knowing so little about him, yet be recognition, Karne knew him to be at the least affiliated with the Matashina Covenant and now, that meant something to him. He might not have cared in the past, but these days everything depended on their ability to work together, to survive the Human purge against their kind.

He couldn't seem to focus his mind on anything long enough to form a plan of action, the phone having been his only real life line, it had been an automatic response to reach for it in a time of need. Anything else seemed like much to much effort for his brain to currently comprehend as the bullet fragments poisoning him did their number on his coherent consciousness.
The clattering of the phone pieces dropping to the ground as his fingers loosened, roused him just enough to raise his eye line a figure appearing and moving closer to him in silence, he watched the the figure which looked nothing more then a blurred mass to him as it moved to stop before him, his gaze moving to look passed it to see if there were any others.

Fighting would have been pointless, so would trying to flee. But at this point the concept of being in danger didn't register with him enough to even consider moving. A sort of numb sensation had not only fallen upon his body, it had also dulled his mind numbing his senses enough leave him in a partially trance like state.

A firm grip upon him forced him forward from the wall as Karne looked over the wounds speaking words he struggled to grasp as dazed eyes met the male before him. Fighting to make out the features of his face his eyes narrowed some what, a sense of knowing upon him that soon washed away when once again Karne was moving him, the scent of blood strong yet not readily rousing him from his stupor.

Blood on blood caused life to dance along the wound once again, his body assimilating it to draw enough energy to once again start fighting to push the remaining fragments from his body and counteract their effects.
Pain gradually returned, the more the healing process gathered strength a jolt of pain rushing through him burning down his spine and along his arm as Karne pulled him supported onto his feet. “Holy fuck..” a gasped curse uttered on a hiss as his mind wavered upon the brink of clarity once again.
Turning his head he looked upon the familiar face once again, still unable to piece together exactly what or who he was yet, “Where are we going?”

"I have a safehouse nearby...-It's my personal refuge in this City, not connected to the Covenant itself though you're too far from the Blackwood for me to drag your ass back there and I have other priorities here I have to tend to before I can return..."

He explained quietly as he supported Matthews weight, the Vampire seeming to come to grips with the situation though his gaze still rang with some uncertainty towards Karne himself. It wasn't exactly the best first impression, Karne supposed. The two had not talked at the evening meal that Ajax and Hope had hosted, in fact Karne had managed to avoid talking to most of them in general, choosing to keep to himself and simply study the new additions to their house, it had been easier to remain silent and to learn of them through listening to the way they spoke, watching the way that they acted around one another, body language and tone of voice held a lot to be seen, understanding people by the way they portrayed themselves. Kenshu had been with him, that had been enough for Karne to not walk out on the meal. It wasn't the easiest move to make, uniting two households while simultaneously giving up his former position at the head of their own, but he knew it was the right one.

Ten to fifteen minutes, they moved from sidewalk to sidewalk, passing through the streets that seemed the emptiest and doing his utmost to keep this man out of the eyes of the public, eventually leading him to the three bedroom house who's yard was too small to contain much of anything. Passing through the gate, Karne led him through the back and into the Kitchen, lowering Matthew down upon one of the couches and soon moving to clear up the room adjacent to it, the living room of which held several blankets, some bloodied bandages and food wrappings. It was something of a mess though he doubted this would matter. In the room further to the front of the house, Cassandra, to Karne's knowledge slept.

"I've never seen a Vampire survive an Ultra-Violet round like that...-And I've seen a lot of shit in my time..." Karne spoke as he returned to the kitchen, discarding the rubbish into the bin before turning towards the fridge, much of it stocked with human foods, nothing of which did him any good though it were meant for Cassandra. At the top however he had stacked a few blood bags that he had managed to salvage from the last raid he had done for the Covenant. Fortunate that he'd pocketed some for himself, it would accelerate matthews healing. "Get this into you..." Karne encouraged him, tossing the bag into the other Vampires lap as he leaned back against the counter and watched his new affiliate with no subtlety in his intrigue.

"What'd you get yourself into, back there...?".

Following the answer he nodded having little choice then to trust Karne with his life. Either that or he returned to his alleyway grave to rot. Eye brows gradually knit together as the blood Karne had given him started to sustain life within the cells localized to the wound again.
During his many years Matthew had suffered from more burns caused by Enya then he could count. He had been in fights to the death, watched nations fall and been on the front line of numerous blood filled battles yet he had never before felt a pain like the pain emitting from his back. It radiated to all areas of his body causing side effects he had not witnessed since his days as a human being. A sweat had broken out upon his flesh, a fever within burning wildly yet he felt deathly cold, enough to cause him to shiver.

The walk felt like a life time and multiple times he found himself muttering strings of expletives beneath his breath in many different languages as his body willed him to stop, while the stranger he now was slowly starting to remember willed him onwards.
Memories of Karne had been intermittent and often confusing, most of them being violent but he found himself willing them on, their distraction a positive one to get his mind away from his current state.

Being led into a house he sighed relief flooding him as Karne aided him onto a sofa. Leaning his head back against the rest he closed his eyes his features tight as he tried to find some sort of position that offered comfort as Karne moved off into the house busying himself with something.
Groaning to himself he gave up trying to find a preferred way to lie, his eyes opening up slowly as he rose his shaking hands up to his face to swiftly remove the contact lenses from his eyes revealing the amber of their true colour and relieving their discomfort .

As Karne returned putting things in the bin he spoke to him again, Matthew rolling his head on the back of the sofa so he could watch him move about.
“Nor have I...” he replied quietly. Usually a UV round would light its target up like a firework and leave not much more then an ashen corpse. He was starting to wish he had that fate, becoming a vampire hadn't even hurt as much and that had involved dying.

A blood pack was slung his way landing against his legs. “Thanks”taking it up he uncapped the top, taking a steady drink from it weary of the additional pain it would cause when it assisted his body in fighting harder against the effects of the Uv round.
Drinking half the bag he recapped the top placing it down beside him, Karne now wanting some sort of explanation.
“More then I expected” he replied bluntly as he leaned forward his teeth grit as he started to ease one arm after the other out of his coat to free himself from it, despite the cold he felt, the weight of it felt suffocating.
Pushing it away he moved back into his prior position wondering what Karne's deal was.
“I had a meeting with 'The Boss'... the one that runs the markets linked to the casino. I have set up a pay as you go blood donation service if you could call it that” he spoke quietly in an attempt to conserve his energy yet give Karne his answer, he figured the guy deserved as much for saving him.
“Turns out opposition were there, they tried to take him out. I stopped it.. with my back” he rose an eye brow not daring to shrug. “Was a success though. The coven in Black woods never have to do a blood run again”

The underground of Saint City had it's uses, Karne had to agree. Quite frankly it had come up recently in his thoughts as towards arming the Covenant with the very near weapons the humans themselves used. UV rounds were of course one such truly effective tool for fighting off the Vampire kind, like sunlight within a bullet, they were more often than not a one shot kill; Matthew being the exception no doubt because of the bloodline that he carried, something that was interesting in itself, he carried the blood of the Elder Covenant.

"I suppose you figured the risk was worthwhile in the end huh..."

Karne remarked under his breath, looking down at the male from his casual lean against the kitchen bench, uncertain whether he should be frustrated that the male had not thought to ask anyone for assistance, or otherwise impressed at his confidence in thinking he didn't need it.

"You can't trust anyone these days. I'm surprised you didn't go to the others for help...-It's blind luck that I'm even in this place, had things been going normally for me, I'd have been nowhere near here to pull your ass out of that slump..."

He tossed his packet of cigarettes to the couch seat beside Matthew, it was an offer to the other, one that reinforced the neutral ground between them, despite his words almost sounding lecturing in some way. Karne didn't like to be excluded from the affairs of the Covenant though that was very much his life these days and in some sick twist of fate, it echoed the desire he'd had as a child growing up in the manor, wanting nothing to do with his Father. In the end, he got what he'd wanted, it just took so long that his desires had completely reversed by the time his fate was sealed, so to speak.

"You're in no state to make the walk back to the Black Wood"

Karne pointed out the obvious, digging deep into his pocket and pulling out his cell, flicking the old fliptop lid up and entering Hope's number into it. He wasn't sure if Ajax used these things, he wondered if the Vampire even held a care for the technologies of the world though he knew for certain that Hope would relay the message across, not wanting to have anything to do with Karne himself.

Karne wrote:Got one of Ajax' boys here, he's seen better days.

Karne did not look impressed with the whole thing and despite his still obvious pain caused disorientation he began to watch him with a more guarded expression. He'd be damned if he had to explain himself to someone hundreds of years his junior. Hell it was bad enough answering to Ajax most of the time, now Hope, someone barely out of nappies. He wasn't about to be pandered to by another whelp. Yet he sighed his coat now away from him his back against the sofa at an angle to avoid the main wound. Karne had helped him, if he had not have God only knew where he would have found himself, Hell most likely. He had to mentally check himself to remain from biting back at the obvious judgement.

“There were no indications of risk” he replied steadily once Karne had finished speaking. “All previous meetings had been carried out without a hitch. It was and is a business transaction, between businessmen”
He picked up the packet of cigarettes rising it to read the small print upon the packaging, a distraction tactic to keep the irritation he felt at bay, one of the many coping mechanisms he had picked up over the many years he had to swallow his tongue and do his job.

“I have spent close to a thousand years wondering the globe on behalf of the Matashina coven. I have acquired more precious items, creatures then you can house in that coven of yours.. Matashina coven was not born into riches, we raised it... I have been alone for a very long time, asking for help if not something I do. I get the job done, then I move on... You should be happy about that, had anyone else come with me they would have been lit up like a Christmas tree”

Taking the cigarette he placed it between his lips, the action taking a moment until his hand was steady enough to let go and retrieve the lighter to ignite it. A sigh leaving him as he closed his eyes leaning his head once again on the sofa having seen Karne rise his phone for use.
He didn't need to ask what he intended to do with it.

“Got any gauze?” Opening one eye he looked upon him, “And a shirt, I will reimburse you of course... that or daddy dearest will”

'I have acquired more precious items, creatures then you can house in that coven of yours.. Matashina coven was not born into riches, we raised it'

Karne's eyes narrowed upon the other a moment, he took the words as if they were by some demeanor comparing the Matashina Covenant to the Death Covenant and while Karne may have been younger, his house was founded long before he had been but a glint in his fathers eye. It wasn't until he made the sarcastic remark regarding 'daddy dearest' that Karne clicked as to the relationship this Vampire held with Ajax; A Son...-Atleast of sorts.

It was difficult to ignore the comments being thrown at him though his gaze was forcibly dropped in favor of the cigarette in his hand. In his weakened state, Karne might have had a chance of killing this Vampire whose veins carried the Elder blood, and yet what would that have achieved in the end, save for his pride of which was already more than bruised of late.

"Well then, congratulations are in order. Both on this business arrangement and your time of leisure spent traversing the world...".

He responded with no subtlety in his equal sarcasm, retaliatory and yet lacking any malice that might have been thrown back at any other for assuming (or at the least, coming off as though), that the Death Family was some house built on royalties not earned through the hard centuries that had built it up. Perhaps they looked like shit now but the name still carried and immense amount of pride for Karne, it was something that he wouldn't let go of despite his differences with his father of the past.

"Perhaps with all this experience behind you, you might have learned that bullets thrown at high velocity, tend to fucking hurt...Especially when packed with Ultra-Violet Radiation simulating fuckin' sunlight".

Karne made a grab for the medical kit, crude as it were, home-made and full of jumbled bandages and the odd bottle of disinfectants, ointments and what have you. A quiet snicker escaped him as he found amusement in his own instinctive retort, it wasn't a conscious effort, the words rolled off of his tongue so easily it caused a slighted laugh at the others expense and negated his frustrations for the time. Regardless, he placed the medical kit down beside him, housing all that the other might need to tend to himself.

"Will there be anything else then, or are you good to resume taking care of yourself as you apparently always have...".

Post by Matthew M on Tue 04 Apr 2017, 13:41

Karne was obviously unhappy with Matthew's response to his own patronising comments. He waited for some sort of show of power or maybe even a violent reaction, after all that was what the Death family were known for but found his reply come in another form.
Sarcasm dripped from every word Karne spoke when he replied and Matthew found himself smirking a little at all of it. His smirk only growing into a laugh when Karne started to out rightly take the piss out of him for his actions in taking the bullet.

Laughing at this point he grimaced leaning forward and away from the sofa as his left arm went across to brace the front of his right shoulder where the bullet had impacted within.
"Well now..look who has a little fire in their veins" he mumbled half to himself in response to Karne's words.

Looking at the first aid box he had been given he attempted to steady himself his laughter trailing off leaving a light smile upon his lips as he carefully removed his hand so he could look through the first aid kit with it. Karne asking him in an asshole type way if he needed anything else.

"On this one occasion I might have to have to admit defeat" he smirked grabbing the arm of the chair to aid him onto his feet, which took a lot more effort then he tried to let on, his head swimming enough to make him feel his stomach churn in another very strangely human sensation.

"As much as I don't want your head to expand anymore then it has by pointing out my obvious failings..." he moved now to take the first aid kit into his hand, his body swaying as he did, forcing him to drop it and grab the arm of the sofa once again.

"I need these fragments out..." he really wasn't looking forward to their retraction. "If they stay in much longer Ajax will be collecting a corpse"

"You might want to get used to it, this place is a fucking shit hole for the best of us..."

Karne responded regarding Matthews decision to bow out and admit verbal defeat, Arcane and her neighboring cities had ruined their race over the years, a number of centuries worth of karma thrown back at them for all the harm they'd done the human world behind the cloak of night.

Grabbing Matt under the arm, he steadied the Vampire and guided him across to the kitchen bench of which sat several stools that he might sit upon, making it easier to set to work on the mans back.

"Cause you a little pain and discomfort? Certainly, won't hurt me none..."

He agreed to help, and while not intending on causing him any further pain, the little added threat didn't hurt. Matthew had commented on the fire in Karne's veins though he truthfully had no fucking idea really, his life had been built up on broken pride and an over-exagerated amount of testosterone, surrounded by women with no one to fight it out of him. Hell, in these days his best bet for support was Kenshu and even then, she used to be batshit fucking crazy, arguably more so than he had ever been. Still, Karne had to admit that the thought of her sticking around set him at ease a damn site more than anything else had lately. If there was paternal love in his live, it was probably coming best from her...

"This shit's going to burn like a mother fucker..."

He added as he moved to recover the medical box, placing it up upon the bench near to where Matthew might park himself, removing some of the gauze bandaging, a bottle of anti-septic liquid for disinfecting the charred flesh, though it probably did little good to already dead skin anyway, it was the thought that counts right? A bit of pain on the side might also serve as a friendly reminder not to be a fucking asshole in Karne's own house.

With the combined help of Karne's own knife more often used for killing than saving a life, he paired it with a pair of tweezers and set to work, digging out as many pieces of silver and led that he could find, whilst also washing out any remaining UV fluid from the punctured skin with the disinfectant. Surprisingly this was a first for him, digging bullets out of someone elses skin, most common was the need to mediate his own wounds, for all the trouble that he'd find himself in. Thank Christ his Children didn't have the same wreckless streak as they seemed to have.

His shoulder had taken the first of the shots that had been volleyed his way, the bone had been shattered closer towards the collarbone, though it was already in the process of healing due to Karne shedding his own blood in order to accelerate the Vampires regeneration, if he had to guess it was the silver that was slowing it down however and as he worked in further silence, his sarcastic tone all but died out, he spent the next fifteen minutes or so ensuring that he'd gathered every list fragment he could possibly see before setting to patching him up.

Re: Dealer

Post by Matthew M on Tue 04 Apr 2017, 14:27

“Oh I dunno... lots of pretty street lights” he replied, he had been in worse places. Saint's certainly was one of the armpits of the world though. Yet Matthew sort of liked it. The more corruption in the human world the more the Immortals could find alliances, in business at least. But that was what had got him in this position. Though he still remained unperturbed by it, the deal was in place, that was all that mattered. He was sure Ajax would probably have something to say, hell Enya  would probably give him a good bitch slap when she found out, but in the long run he had achieved something for them all and that was what he was good at. They couldn't expect to keep him locked up in the Manor, it wasn't in his nature, he would have gone insane. He was no fool he knew the more time flew by the closer to crazy town the Ancients became, he figured staying active was the key.

Karne helped him to move again and he nodded in a show of gratitude as he followed him towards some stools by a table. It sure was something to be finding himself in such a vulnerable position around one so young, had he the energy he would have felt the sting of anger course through his body. But that would come later.

Taking the seat before him he slid onto it with a small laugh. “Yeah, don't enjoy yourself to much”
He had done nothing to deserve Karne's help, let alone his compassion so he would not ask for it. His focus on surviving the level of poison his body had already consumed more then it was on the amount of pain he was about to go through.

Sliding his arms out in front of him, he wrapped his right fingers around the table's opposing edge. His head lowering to close his eyes and allow Karne complete access to the wound as he braced himself.
As Karne began to work Matthew kept his composure the best he could, the wound being cleared of all debris and any dead flesh, the pain of it was all consuming at times his fingers having split the wood beneath them after the first few moments.
He was glad for the silence Karne had offered in those moments finding a respect in the man for going beyond what was expected to make sure that he had the best chance at healing.

Once the antiseptic was in and the gauze being placed he loosened his stance, his fingers leaving their new indentations as he drew his arms gingerly back towards his body. All arrogance and pride replaced with a much more subdued version of himself as he tried to once again find his baring.
A few moments passed before he dared to move, a ringing that had been deafening him fading to a low tone as he let out a slow exhale. “Thank you”
Moving his attention back to Karne a moment or so later he started to once again get onto his feet, not wanting to look anywhere near as pathetic as he currently did when Ajax arrived.
“I owe you one... Maybe two”

"Don't mention it...-I would hope the same would be done for my Children were they in your position..."

Karne decided to let his earlier comments go as his mind went specifically to Ajax residing in the manor alongside Hope and Marcus. Were they ever to be in a bind, he expected Ajax to do right by them but such deeds were not to go unpaid in kind. Ajax had agreed to supporting the Death Covenant, he'd pushed for the Matashina to merge with their house and in his help, Karne couldn't rightly turn away one of his people. Besides, the arrogance in this one reminded him a little more of himself, though with a bit more tact perhaps.

"So you're Ajax's flesh and blood then?"

He asked rather more casually now, the tension in the moment prior now passed, he turned his sights on the prospective future in which unlike the dinner party that he had gone out of his way to remain quiet and isolated, here he had an opportunity to get to know one of them, one on one.

"By the sound of it, you're as proud of your house as I am of the history in mine...-What take do you have on all this, the business with the two Covenants coming together?"

It seemed a worthwhile question, perhaps the only question with any significance of late; it'd be good to get some insight as to the general vibe going on in Ajax's own house. They were to be living under his roof, with his family while Karne himself hadn't yet decided if he was avoiding it by nessecity or preference. Regardless, the Black Wood was no longer the site of the Death Family Covenant, but the new Vampire Coven that they were bringing to form at the conjoining of the two. All the history that flowed behind Karne, would die with him in the end. All that would proceed into the future, would start with them.

"You don't strike me as the type to want to be ordered around by the likes of my Daughter..."

It wasn't an insult, Karne himself wouldn't answer to Hope if she tried though he was her Father and his actions would put them first, regardless of whether or not she would agree. That Matthew might not follow her however was more an assumption brought on by his choice to go rogue, working alone and nearly getting himself killed, it couldn't be any truer that his methods left Karne with the impression that Ajax might have been given a frequent headache in the Vampires madness. Something Karne could relate to, and more to the point, something he could respect.

"Of course" he replied as Karne mentioned his children. They were now part of his family and he would lay his life down for family without hesitation. If anything he had proven that tonight by making sure nothing would halt his arrangements to make sure the family could feed safely from then onward.
Cursing profanities underneath his breath once again he walked back in the direction of the sofa Karne had placed him on before. It had proved to be more comfortable then the stool.
Sitting down wasn't any where near as graceful as usual yet once down he sighed relaxing as far as the wound would allow. By this point he appeared to be suffering some sort of flu like symptoms as it all worked through his body. Karne how ever had ensured his survival, at least he felt confident that he had done.

Karne was inquisitive but that was only natural considering their current state of involvement with one another.
Matthew usually would have gone for tact in his reply, he would have toned down any opinions he may or may not have had in order to keep up appearances, how ever not being that sound of mind Matthew did not filter his words.

"He is my sire" he replied a little irritation to his tone. He had never wanted to be what Ajax had made him, he had been given very little choice. "He wanted my sister. I wouldn't let her go... so here we are" he responded. The memory of Ajax taking Enya from his very arms still something that bothered him when it came into his mind.

"I am very proud of my house" his words cut into Karne's, he felt trapped by them, suffocated and at some times he felt like a captive yet he admired all they had done. "I am just not like them, that is all" he made no attempt to further explain his differences, it really did not matter. He could not leave for good, he always came back. Enya and Ajax ensuring that.

"I'm not the type to be ordered around by anyone. I will respond when asked. Not when told, I am no dog" he had this very argument with Ajax many a time. Much blood had been shed over his refusal to take a knee.
"I would die for your daughter. I would die for any one of the Matashina or the Death coven. That is really all that matters"

So then, Ajax Matashina wasn't so perfect after all, how very interesting that was to hear. On the outside Karne made no notion of acknowledging the darkness behind the deed, he wouldn't be seen to judge by others when he himself had a reputation for having done much worse, yet it reassured Karne in simply knowing that the Elder who had appeared to very clean, had a dark side behind him. Karne never could trust someone infallible but one who had fucked up, one who was prone to imperfection brought them down to his level, with or without the Elder blood coursing throughout their veins.

"That must have been hard"

He said simply, turning his attention to take a drag upon the back of his cigarette while his mind mulled over the response he'd been given. Matthew had neglected to go into any detail yet for what he had said, it had spoken well enough for his position. Much like Karne, he was willing to do what was best for those he cared for, regardless of the fact that it buried the past of their households, instead joining them into one and shitting on the past. It was a nessecary sacrifice and one Karne had put into play for Ajax to follow through with alongside his daughter; all the while Karne secretly detesting the fact that it was bringing an end to an Era that he held close to his heart, no matter how dead it had become. The Children hadn't been brought up in it, they had only just been introduced to it and in this one simple fact, they would be saved the Death Covenant's habit of destroying everything they'd held dear. Enough damage had been done in their lives and they were still young and the rest of the Covenant had come along centuries before. The hope was that they could be spared yet...

"The Death Family Covenant is my birthright, and my curse. It's one true leader was my father, another who was turned against his will by his father...-KnOT slew him in response and in meeting the few lesser Vampires like himself, he pulled them off of the street and took the fight not only to the Lycan but to the Hierarchy of the Elder Covenant in this land. In his pride, he achieved great things and too brought it all crushing down on everything he loved...-I inherited this from a bitten, one like yourself...-So in a way, you can be rest assured, it doesn't speak any less for the impact you can have upon the world around you..."

Karne was actually going out of his way to reassure Matthew, being a bitten was nothing to be ashamed of. Karne had come into the life a pure blood and that had gotten him nowhere, status amongst their race held such less importance in todays light than ever before, especially when the race was so close towards extinction in the country. When Matthew claimed not to be like the rest, it caused Karne to laugh and respond in kind.

"Nor am I, though whether that's a positive or a negative depends entirely upon whom you ask. My daughter might have you believe I am the shit on the boot heel of this House, but she has her own mind, her own perspectives...-I've made my bed and she'd burn it down as I slept had she the chance..."

Karne chuckled quietly, though it would be difficult to dismiss the remorse in his laugh as his gaze fell and his eyes narrowed against the cigarette smoke that bellowed up against his face, moved passed his eyes and stung at their edges.

"It's not a bad thing, being one to refuse to take orders...-I am the same. Just don't go looking to the future while your present is coming undone around you; that's all I can advise should you wish to hear it. Don't forsake the ones you're trying to protect...-Be there for them"

He smiled, though it came off rather grim, that former bite in his bark having died away for what might represent regret, his stare somewhat vacant as he turned to glance back in Matthews direction, his eyes seemingly staring through the other Vampire before his conscience caught up and he realized how he might have been sounding.

"Life's too short...Especially for Immortals these days, thanks to the Corporation".

Some how he seemed to have hit a soft spot in Karne with his responses. It had been unintentional but it changed the tone of the conversation none the less. The former coven leader opening up first with sympathy towards how Matthew had come to be the vampire he was today and then by reflecting upon his own past in a way of trying to advise Matthew on a new path to take.
He remained silent for a while thinking over what he had been told, he probably appeared to either be passed out or asleep but he made no effort to move his form working over time to restore and regenerate itself. It was exhausting yet managed to hear the meaning behind the words Karne spoke. Whether he thought them relevant to himself or not.

Their opinions differed vastly but he respected Karne's view anyway his eyes parting to look upon the younger male once again. For now still silent. He just looked at him, really looked and there it was obvious. Karne was worn down and tired like an old beaten dog yet he was true to his lineage, he refused to back down and give up. To Matthew that was trait that all vampires should have, it was what they were. They were top of the food chain. No matter what they faced they were not built to take it lying down.

“I'm not ashamed of being bitten” he responded after silence had been between them for what seemed like a long time. “I am scorned by it” It was a strange thing to say. His entire life he had simply just got on with it. Enya knew how he felt, Ajax knew more then anyone yet Matthew had never actually spoken of it before. His behavioural changes during transition had been obvious enough.
His sister had taken to it like a duck to water, he had not. It was still the way. Enya had always been different, she had always been the brighter of the two with her elemental flame ability, Matthew had been the one in the background. He had like that. He had forever mourned his human life and the human death he had been denied.
For everything he now was, everything he had achieved in his long life he still resented Ajax even with the love he felt for the man. He even resented his sister, who he loved above anyone else.
Yet as age progressed it was convoluted a hatred for human kind steadily growing which caused inner conflict Matthew had never known how to articulate.

“Life is not short. Give it a few more years and you will see that all to well... I wonder, do you practice what you preach Karne?”

"From time to time..."

Karne admitted it truthfully, much of the time he had been guilty of hypocrisy in the things he tried to tell his Children as opposed to leading by example, his place in the world wasn't to be better than they, but to do the terrible shit so that they would never have to. Much as was the Death Dealers of the Death Family Covenant, so too shaped in the image of his father, was Karne's education in his upbringing.

"You might say I do whatever is nessecary, so that my Children remain whole. That's not to say that they approve, I am in every right a fucking abolishment to our race but in the things I've done, the blood that i've spilled, they're still here...-Without that, it would all be for nothing. You, them, fuck, anyone can argue with the things I've done, there's little morality in the path that I walk, but I do it so they do not have that same blood on their hands, so that they cannot say that they've come into a world and been so fucked up by it as I have. Atleast, not within my control..."

Plague and Xaphan, even the Oxen Corporation had struck blows against his Covenant of which he could never help his children to forget, yet with the attacks that he could deter, he'd gone out of his way to do so. Bloodying his own self image in order to try to protect them. It was all so very fucked up, a true novel for the aspiring writer and theoropist, yet what the fuck did he care so long as the children remained alive and in the back of the house, Cassandra slept blissfully unaware...

"I'm no patron Saint, don't get me wrong. What's done on my end is done, I'm simply advising you to stay close while you still have a family that wants you close by...."

Karne smirked a little at the irony of things between them. He actually felt he could relate more with this man than his own Son and in Matthew he had only known for the space of fourty or so minutes...

"We are fucking Vampires after all and this is Arcane's sister City...."

His arms extended out to his sides as if to say 'look at this, what do you expect'. Moving for the nearby cabinet, he soon retreated into the company of a rather fine looking bottle of whiskey, taking out two glasses where as he would've only remained with a single for himself.

"I've got a reputation to keep. The type of people around this land, you show them weakness and they'll fucking chew you up and spit you out..."

Karne didn't care to think about the age difference between them, he spoke like an adult, he was used to being nothing less with the Children and their little friends like Knigh, he wasn't accustomed to being at the bottom of the barrel and he'd never let anyone else tell him such, it was a short way to getting your throat slit. Still, such things were better left unsaid, for the time being he was enjoying Matt's company and didn't see any need for their little chat to come to an end. Handing the Vampire the glass, he lifted his own in a silent toast in acknowledgement before throwing it back in one smooth gulp.

"Sometimes, you just gotta show this world who's King..."

“Oh OK... so never then” he smirked at Karne knowing he looked at someone similar to himself. Karne was probably about as good at helping himself as Matthew was at keeping his temper in check.
He chuckled to himself as Karne spoke of the things he had done and the way he had acted. Only a short time ago the man was lecturing him about going off on his own and acting without help. Now he was admitting to doing pretty much exactly the same thing and not only that he was justifying the reasons behind his actions.
“Pot calling the kettle black” me mumbled once again adjusting his stance upon the chair as he saw that there would be no ducking out of the conversation at hand.
Leaning forward so his left shoulder leant upon his knee he balanced himself figuring it would at least keep anything from pressurising his back any further.

“Staying close is not down to location, it is down to the bonds you have with them” he replied unsure if Karne really understood how it all worked. “Distance is not the issue. You could be half an hour away from someone and they still wouldn't call you in their time of need, the bond is more important” he had a strange relationship with Ajax, half the time they loved to hate each other yet either of them would be there in a heart beat to help the other out.

Karne seemed to be riling himself up a bit and it made Matthew laugh, the man suddenly seeming to be much prouder of his species and his behaviour then he had only moments before. Declaring that they had to be kings of their domain.
Shaking his head with an amused expression he took the glass, sure it wouldn't really do him any good, alcohol thinning the blood but he drank it back anyway, opting to think of it as more a duller of pain.

“You are one pretty crazy dude” he responded looking down at his glass wondering to himself whether he had ever actually met anyone like Karne before. The man echoed a lot of the same thoughts Matthew himself so often had, even though he had attempted to talk him round from them. The fact was Matthew had been getting along fine just the way he was, at least until the UV round had found a new home within his flesh.
“Some times being king is not all it cracks up to be though man. Keep that in mind”

"Perhaps not..."

Karne agreed though in his tone there was no remorse over his final remark, of course it wasn't always easy being at the head but then if it were, everyone would try to take to the top wouldn't they.

"Sometimes, you do things not because you want to but because you feel other people shouldn't...-Had I never needed to kill someone in order to get by and do right by my Children, I probably wouldn't have but I have..."

And he had enjoyed it. Every life taken in the name of the Covenant was evidence of action taken out of his perversed care for those around him, whether or not they agreed nor saw his reasoning. It had given him purpose in the later years where he felt hope was lost in reuniting his family.

"Demons slew their mother, trapped and tortured her. The Humans have ravaged these lands and wiped nearly all of our kind from this country. The only reason that I am still here is because I've refused to let some small minded fuck take me out..."

Matthew had in part misunderstood Karne's advice, it had been purely for the other, not for himself and if that made him a hypocritt then so be it but from where he sat, Matt still had a family to return to, he had not tarnished that yet.

"I killed my father. Later, I drove my own flesh and blood away through decisions I felt were best for them, not for the intent to do so but their inability to see to my perspective made it so, none the less. So yes, I suppose it's not all it's 'Cracked up to be' and yet I still believe that what I've done has on several occasions aided in keeping them safe and out of the hands of the enemy. I may be a fucking monster at the end of the day, but there's a reason behind my madness..."

Self reflection came easy these days, narcissism was very much something that ran through their family, it had overcome his father and blinded him. Karne hadn't gotten to that point yet, he had ensured his priorities remained on the twins, yet that didn't come on par with coushioning their feelings (as much as he may have wanted too); He had instead brought on some hefty consequences towards himself, out of trying to do what he could to protect them.

"What can I say..." He chuckled somewhat dryly under his breath, "Nobodies perfect right?".
